How a Septic Tank works!

The Septic tank separates out the solids from the liquids in your sewage and allows the liquid effluent to enter the leachfield. The tanks typically sold in the Anchorage area have a central baffle in the tank that provides for 2 compartments and greater separation efficiency. The older tanks, specifically concrete tanks did not have this feature. In our cold soil the septic tanks do not operate as effectively as other states and therefore it is recommended that they be pumped more frequently to limit the passing of suspended solids to the leachfield. Typically a 2 year time span is a safe estimate for pumping frequency.

At this time there is no proven or recommended additive to enhance septic tank performance.
